Nourishing Beloved Community's food program arose in 2023 out of a desire among BIPOC residents in rural Jefferson County to create sustainable models for addressing food access and hunger relief, while building a socially and economically cohesive, thriving community. Since 2025, the program has also served the Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual community. It also specifically serves immigrant families across the region.
Roughly 200 people a week are fed through the program. Bags of organic items go out every week for pickup or delivery in Port Townsend, Chimacum, Port Hadlock and Quilcene.
What distinguishes this program is its focus on resilience. Funding provides food within the community as well as plant starts and other gardening implements for community members to grow their own food for their families and the community.
That means your donation feeds approximately 200 people and supports an additional 20 to 30 families of agricultural producers at the same time. The dollars circulate inside the community, strengthening both the people eating and the people growing.
Here are the problems you can help solve
The obstacles NBC addresses are the same ones facing everyone on a tight budget in a rural county, sharpened by circumstance: the economy, transportation, and the cost of housing in the region. When housing takes what it takes, food is what gives.
State funding NBC once relied on has become unreliable. The organization applied for a new round of state funding it believed was secured, and even that now appears in question.
What your donation makes possible
NBC’s 2027 target is 1,950 bags of food distributed, feeding approximately 200 people and benefiting an additional 20–30 producer families. Your donation will help provide the bulk of this food budget.
